Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is exactly what it sounds like – a musical about Carole King’s life and about her music. From hearing the countless familiar songs to seeing the flashy costumes from the 1960s and 70s, audiences laugh and cry watching King’s heart-wrenching, yet beautiful, life story.
Carole King may be a no-name to younger generations, but her songs aren’t. “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?,” “I Feel The Earth Move,” and “You’ve Got a Friend” are just a few of King’s most famous songs. During the Broadway show, as soon songs started playing, audiences’ heads would nod in recognition, and some would even start singing along!
Carole King always loved songwriting, and sold her first song at 16. At that same time, she got pregnant with her boyfriend, also a songwriter. They married, and successfully worked together on songs – she wrote the music, he wrote the lyrics. Their two best friends, also songwriters, were their main competition. The four of them spent many years at the same company writing songs for the big-name artists of the time (e.g. The Drifters, The Righteous Brothers, etc). Eventually, Carole’s marriage fell apart and she went off on her own to become the solo artist we all know and love. Abby Mueller, starring as Carole King, is the sister of Jessie Mueller, the original actress that played King. Clearly, talent runs in the Mueller family!
My friend, Adam Dietlein, plays multiple roles in “Beautiful,” and we were able to get a backstage tour after the show!
